legend of báthory
overview
The legendary figure of Erzsébet Báthory is based on two 18th-century sources, the Tragica historia and Burg und Stadt Csejte, which were later used by Alajos Mednyánszky in 1826. The dowager countess is associated with cruel deeds and vampiric horrors, but in reality she was a loving farmer, a supporter of students and a healer. George Thurzo's trial was politically motivated and the charges were forced out by torture. Based on scientific research, Erzsébet Báthory was found innocent and the accusations of atrocities were fabricated. The countess was probably tried for confiscating Nádasdy's property. A 2008 film, which presents the other side of the legend, attempts to rehabilitate the incoherent and exaggerated allegations.
